A survey of nurse practitioner’s views on registered nurse prescribing in Australia — Conflicted perspectives

BackgroundThe Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia has proposed a standard practice that enables registered nurses (RNs) to prescribe under partnership model. This requires extensive input support from authorised prescribers including nurse practitioners. Understanding practitioners’ views preparedness prescribing is imperative its successful adoption.AimTo report Australian on the RN-prescribing standard.MethodsThis cross-sectional study surveyed convenience sample practitioners using multiple-choice, Likert Scale open-text responses. Quantitative data were analysed descriptive statistics; short answer responses explored thematically.FindingsThe majority 229 participants (n = 183, 76.2%) agreed would optimise RN knowledge, skills, capability. Mentorship was highest-rated enabling factor 205, 89.5%). Three themes identified: lived experience practitioners, perceived impact practitioner roles, patient safety.DiscussionParticipant conflicted. While potential advantages for patients, RNs, healthcare system acknowledged, there equal concern implementation prescribing, role ambiguity, erosion safety. Nurse will be an important component implementation.ConclusionRN opportunity potentially improve consumer access medicines enhance efficiency. It also nursing profession contribute improved systems care while embedding succession planning advanced roles.
